Are you even shocked…
Prosecutors in Wisconsin are considering charges today after a Maplewood man was arrested for allegedly leaving his 18-month-old son in a van outside a strip club for several hours Wednesday night.
The police report filed in the case said that while the 45-year-old man lounged inside the Cajun Club in St. Croix County in Wisconsin, temperatures outside dipped into the low 20s.
A customer entering the hilltop club overlooking Stillwater about 1 a.m. Thursday told staff there was a baby crying in a van outside, said manager Tess Ross. She went to look.
“I was shocked,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it was a little baby. I felt so bad.”
After checking to see that the doors of the van were locked, she called 911.
Hillstead said the little boy was found wearing socks, a jacket, and sweat pants. He was taken to a hospital in Hudson, Wis., where he was treated for exposure and frostbite. By Friday, the boy was released into his mother’s custody.
“He’s just lucky it wasn’t 10 degrees colder, or that baby could have been in serious trouble,” Hillstead said.
The man was arrested on suspicion of neglect of a child, a misdemeanor, and booked into the county jail. The man’s wife posted $250 bail early Thursday.
Smoking Bans: But..But.. everyone else is doing it!
Madison - A statewide smoking ban would not apply to bars and restaurants for the first year, under a measure advanced Tuesday by a Senate committee.
The ban for other workplaces and public buildings would begin in January 2009, with bars and restaurants following in 2010, under the compromise.
The prospects for the measure are uncertain.
Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle said bars and restaurants should not get a special exemption. A statewide smoking ban is a top priority of Doyle’s.
Doyle spokesman Matt Canter said the governor supports a statewide ban without exemptions.
“Close to half the states in the nation are moving toward smoke-free public places,” said Canter, who noted that statewide bans have become law in neighboring Minnesota and Illinois.
“The Legislature should act so that Wisconsin does not become the ashtray of the Midwest,” Canter said.
Heh. The “ashtray of the Midwest”? Nice line. No problem being the tax hell of the Midwest, but ashtrays… no thanks.
Let’s look at this line:
“Close to half the states in the nation are moving toward smoke-free public places,” said Canter
What a moronic statement. Close to half? That means MORE than half aren’t. Why should we be in the minority? What makes that a great idea?
But.. okay, I’m willing to work with them on this, if that’s going to be the standard.
More than 3/4 of the states pay less in taxes than we do in Wisconsin. That’s not even close to half, so using their logic, shouldn’t the guv be pushing for lower taxes?
96% of other states allow some type of concealed carry. Using their logic, without question since it’s WAY more than half, the guv should be pushing for CC legislation. I mean, we don’t wan’t to be the sitting ducks of the Midwest now do we?
We could go on and on with this…. 80% of other states have a death penalty. About 87% of the states require you to register to vote before election day. If we are going to do something because “close to half” of other states are doing it, let’s do it right.
Cuprisin sitting too close to Kane?
In his column today, the normally fair-minded Tim Cuprisin had this to say:
Radio talkers aren’t insiders this year. In the past four presidential races, conservative talk radio has offered valuable insight into Republican politics. Not this time.
Milwaukee talkers Charlie Sykes and Mark Belling have been dumping on Mike Huckabee. John McCain has been a target for years.
As we know, Huckabee won Iowa and McCain won New Hampshire.
That doesn’t necessarily mean either will be nominated. It means the talkers were uncharacteristically out of sync with Republican voters in the first two contests.
So, because Iowa and New Hampshire voters don’t agree with Skyes and Belling, conservative talk radio isn’t offering valuable insight?
This actually proves the point that talkers have been making for years. Talk show hosts don’t drive their listeners to vote certain ways. It’s the media and the left that think conservatives are lemmings and will do what their talk show masters tell them to do. This vindicates the talk show hosts and corroborates what they’ve been saying all along.
