Wisconsin Budget Fight

Not much has happened since I was out of town last week, but it does seem that the Dems are getting more desperate to pass this massive, massive tax increasing budget. Seems like they are ratcheting up the lies and scare tactics.

Doyle offers new budget, calls for action

Madison - To force action on the state budget Gov. Jim Doyle said today he will introduce a new version of a two-year spending plan that cuts spending by $430 million and sets aside transportation to be dealt with separately.

WHAT?? We can’t deal with issues separately!!!?!?!?!? Remember when the Republicans tried that with the schools? Judging by the reaction of the Democrats back then, you’d have thought that they proposed to kill the first-born child of every couple in Wisconsin… or worse… to cut off funding for free condoms. No way man, this just can’t be done. (I don’t know why it can’t, I was just told a couple of weeks ago by the Democratic leadership it was really bad to do it this way.)

Now, let’s get to this $430 million dollar “spending cut”. Anybody buying this? So, the Republicans don’t want new taxes and the Governor offers a $430 million dollar spending cut. This should work out, right? I mean the Governor wants to cut spending by $430 MILLION dollars so that means not only should we not have to raise taxes, we should all get some money back, right? That’s what a spending cut means to me.

Not so to the Doylies. In reality, this “spending cut” is just taking a couple of issues (transportation being one) off the table to be debated later when it’s more politically convenient. The $430 million “cut” is just a cut from the BILLIONS they wanted to spend to begin with. It’s no different than when a used car dealer jacks up the price of a car then cuts it to have a sale.

That is the day that Elizabeth Burmaster, state superintendent of public instruction, is required by law to certify school funding levels. She has said she will tell school districts they are getting the same amount as last year because lawmakers have not finalized a new budget, which sets up the potential for a $79 million spike in property taxes in December.

The “potential” for a tax spike. What a load of media BSBias. Not to break any one’s heart here… but that “potential” is always there. First off, the schools will get their money and everyone knows that. In fact, didn’t the Republicans offer to set school funding in a separate bill? Were we not told we can’t do that by the Dems? (I’m having deja vu here) While funding the schools separately would have been good for the schools, teachers, students, and tax payers, it would have been bad for the Dems because they would have lost a scare tactic to debate with. “It’s for the children” only works when it’s politically expedient.

Now, for today’s pièce de résistance. Governor Doyle decides that after sitting in (well… his STAFF was sitting in. He was only there for the hour long photo op) for a couple of weeks, he needs to take the toys from the children and end play time.

“Whenever both sides are close to an agreement, extreme voices in the Republican caucus let out a howl and the leaders shy away,” Doyle said in a statement. “If the Legislature has not come to an agreement by Monday, then I expect both houses to pass this compromise bill - because Wisconsin families cannot afford to wait any longer.”

So he “expects” Republicans to pass his “compromise” bill. Very interesting “compromise” there. It’s extra ballsy to create a bill ON YOUR OWN and then call it a “compromise” bill.

Oh, and Governor… my Wisconsin family can’t wait a lot longer. In fact, I’d argue that my family can’t afford your “compromise”.
